How could the "Empire" of Trebizond survives.

How could Empire of Trebizond survive as "independent" (vassalage are allowed) state, while the Ottoman Empire still exist and thrieve, it doesn't need to stay a empire or even keep the name, just survive as majority Christian (preferable Greek) state to modern day. Could Trebizond survive by being vassalage by the Ottomans, or would it be annexed no matter what.

Do you read my thoughts? ;) I have wondered - or rather: dreamt - of that for some time ...

Realistically, that requires quite a PoD. The Ottomans followed different policies than in later centuries (e.g. as when they subdued Transylvania as a purely Christian vassal).
I do not think they would have accepted that in Anatolia at so early a point and given their status as a moderately-sized, but quickly expanding realm.

Nevertheless, Hungary' s later fate shows that Christian vassals were possible;
likewise, the longevity of Trebizond in comparison with Constantinople shows that it was a tougher nut to crack.

As for a scenario, I would go for crusaders supporting Trebizond after the shock of the fall of Constantinople. Effective support, however, requires passage over the Black sea; the Ottomans did not endager that, I would think, but questions on feasability remain ...

No, I don't think Westerners could realistically have made it to Trebizond after the Turks had both sides of the Marmara.

Muskovy? Could they send aid? Just enough, and for long enough, to allow a negotiated peace that makes Trebizond a Christian vassal.

Why would they? In the first place they were still getting smacked around by the Tartars, and in the second why allow any rivals to the title of Third Rome?

That said, I long for Trebizond to survive too.

Would that apply to Trebizond to, or am I putting too much faith in loyalty?:eek:
