There might not have needed to be a huge POD in terms of battles, wars or conquests.

Melvin Bragg in his book 'The Adventure of English' (which is an excellent history of the English Language) writes that 'after independence, some Americans it is said were swept away by enthusiasm and agreed that America should cut off completely from Britain and adopt another language altogether - French, Hebrew, even Greek were suggested.'

Something to consider perhaps, although it seems a little far fetched, as Bragg himself says.

maybe not, the New England Puritans and their descendance had a boner for learning (see Harvard, Yale, etc) and a big part of that was mandatory, Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, right up till around the time John Adams left Harvard in 1755, a more New England based US surely might have picked Greek or Latin as its governmental Language... though the idea of a Puritan New England Republic reviving Hebrew as its spoken Language is a thing of great beauty :cool:
