Actually, David, I think 'Alien Space Bats' is a perfect title for that particular forum. It reflects what you find there, just as the pre/post 1900 forums, shared worlds, etc. and you know that reality is optional there.
Personally, I find the DBWI threads annoying more of the time. Someone always interjects reality or doesn't follow the tone of what's been said before them.
Oh, I don't deny that the forum reflects what the term evolved into. In that respect, it's appropriate. It's just that Alison hated what the term evolved into, and I sometimes get a little maudlin when I consider what she would think of how it evolved.
There are versions of ASB scenario that she appreciated; in general, those that took as granted an impossible premise (ASB make things such that only weapons that ultimately derive from muscle power work - so bows, spears, trebuchets, but not rifles, grenades, or cruise missiles. You can fly in a plane, but you can only shoot arrows out of it, etc), and then examining how things would develop in such a world. She was playing around with that idea at the time of her untimely death. But by and large, she regarded ASB scenarios as a substitute for thought rather than an aide. "This happens because of ASB, and no attempt to then consider logical consequences because ASB" was her bete noire.
So yes, the phrase as it has become is appropriate. I'm just sad that the phrase turned into what it did. I'm just being a bit maudlin. Of all legacies to leave behind, that would have been the last thing that she would have wanted.
Which is kind of ironic when you consider how almost ASB-esque the story of how she met her husband was.
