How come reigning queens in England in 1500s?

In the early 1100s there was a nasty civil war to prevent the succession of Matiilda to the English throne.

Yet in the 1550s Mary was allowed to take the throne, despite the religious issue.

Then of course there was Elizabeth.

How come England could accept a reighing queen then and not earlier?

Were there any earlier instances of a possible reigning Queen in England?

Who were the plausable Kings at that time?

I dont think the war was just over the issue of Matilda - many had already recognised Stephen as heir.

Also in the intervening centuries some states had queens (Naples, Cyprus, Jerusalem, Navarre) so there would have been more of a role model for Mary by the time she came around

We've had the magna carta and the reduction of the feudal system since then too. The nobles rather than being upset at having to pledge alleigance to a queen instead see it as a good chance to improve their own power.

If I recall correctly, there were none.

yes thats part of why Queens in England happened,

the only heirs of Henry VIII are Mary & Elizabeth

well if you don't want that go to the line of Henry VII, Henry VIII was his only living male heir at the time of his death.

so to Henry VIII's older sister Margaret, she's dead in 1553, but she had a son, James V of Scotland, but he's dead, and his only heir, Mary, Queen of Scots,

well damn maybe her second marriage, nope, by her second marriage Margaret had only a daughter, Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, who does have a son Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, aged 8 in 1553

well maybe if we go with the line of Henry VIII's other sister Mary, well it looks like Mary's oldest living child was a woman, Frances Grey, Duchess of Suffolk who has 3 daughters, Jane Grey, Catherine Grey, and Mary Grey,

Mary's next child was also a woman Eleanor Clifford, Countess of Cumberland, who was dead by 1553, her only child was a girl Margaret Stanley, Countess of Derby

thats why Mary I got the crown, there were NO male heirs to the House of Tudor and Henry VII and Henry VIII wiped out the House of York so no heirs but woman
