How Can Wendell Willkie Win in 1940?

Willkie at least had no doubt what had defeated him. Listening to FDR's Boston speech on the radio ("I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again: Your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars") he burst out: "That hypocritical son of a bitch! This is going to beat me." https://books.google.com/books?id=eJA3BAAAQBAJ&pg=PA596

(Note that in the Boston speech, FDR even omitted his usual qualifier "unless we are attacked." He later justified this--perhaps a bit disingenuously--by saying that if someone attacks us, then it isn't a foreign war...)

if too close to the election to change canidates it came out about FDR handicap or if a rumor gained traction that FDR was either an atheist or a homosexual say hello to president wilkie

Maybe if Willkie had run as more of an isolationist for the whole campaign and gone against Roosevelt on the draft he may have done better.

The problem is that the very reason Willkie was nominated is that unlike Taft, Dewey, and Vandenberg, he was an internationalist.
