There's a TL called 'Reds!' which I think you would like.
Reds! came to mind but that used PoDs prior to WW1 and had the US involved in WW1
More importantly even than them being bad guys is their being a force to prevent individuals from making it. You're forced to rely on them for a wage, instead of the self reliance of a cooperative. The men who don't do physical work are the richest while the men who work hardest are poor. Etc etc.
Possibly, though American individualism is very individualistic - communes and collectives would just be regarded as weighing down ones personal ambitions.
This would be easier prior to the rise of modern individualism though, back when there was much more of a labour movement in the US. The decline of organised labour and the rise of modern individualism really did a number on that (I remember the New Statesman did an article on how such things contributed to the decline of the left and the rise of the right in Europe).
