How big can the Papal States get.

What is the largest viable area of land the Papal States can cover? I am putting this in pre-1900 because the Papal States would probobly reach thier zenith before 1900.

Well, the Pope tried for literally centuries to gain Sicily+Naples, so thats a priem canddiate. And then theres Corsica and Sardinia as well - and that would already be most of modern Italy then...

And the fact that after 1900 they were the Vatican City, which is quite different from the Papal States of old.

Of course. I would think that Tuscany and maybe even Venizia could be given to the Pope. If one were to partially ignore plausibility, then the mazimum that the Papal States could control is the HRE itself plus all of Italy.

and Equador.

Um... what?

The largest it could possibly get is probably not limited. If the pope had won the struggle for supremacy with the HRE, it's conceivable that all Christendom could have fallen under the rule of the Church.

When though? Even fairly early on, the Church didn't quite have total rule over Christian areas such as, say, Russia or Scandinavia or Ethiopia. I would think that for the most powerful Papacy, the Catholic Church would have to stay strong early, preferably if Emperors like Frederick II weren't around to challenge the Papacy, so a POD would probably be in the 12th century.

Ecuador was made, essentially, part of the Papal States sometime during the 1800s.

Socioeconomic domination by the Roman Catholic Church =/= Territory of the Papal States

Plug for a cool series: In The Time Patrol series, there are two alternate worlds viewed. In the first, Frederick II wins, and conquers the world; in the second, the Papacy creates a theocracy that finds itself losing a war to the Turks and Russians centuries later...
