How about a King of the USA who ISN'T George Washington?

Every time there's an "American monarchy" thread it always has Washington as King George I of America. Are there any other people who could have been picked as monarch?

And another idea I wanted to put out here: what if this position of American monarch was an elected-for-life one rather than hereditary?

Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams, just about any of the FF. Any shift of circumstances extreme enough to give America a king in the 1st place could make any of them king.

And one would be to not have Washington or have him killed or die. If he's still around though it's hard to see anyone else. Washington was a towering figure in his time, (literally, he was 6'4") held in near awe by his contemporaries.

One of the FF (I forget who) was an inveterate 'gladhander' addicted to approching and loudly greeting his friends to the point of irritation. One bet him a sumptuous dinner in the best restaurant that he wouldn't have the courage to do so to Washington. He did so, and was answered only with a rather stony glance in return. When asked about it later he said that he would have exchanged a thousand dinners to receiving even a small rebuke from this paragon of stern dignity.

George Washington could be killed say in the aftermath of Saratoga, and Horatio Gates looks like he could become the next Commander-in-Chief, but an act of cowardice costs him the position. Instead, Benedict Arnold, the Hero of Saratoga, could become the Commander-in-Chief. Benedict Arnold would have been a good general, and more important for the timeline, he was a power hungry guy. Arnold would have been a proper revolutionary military leader, refused to give up power, get the Army behind him, and overthrow Congress. The man would have been the founding father figure, the Liberator of America, so he might have gotten away with ruling by fiat. More likely you have a South American reaction to a power-hungry military dictator, Bolivar, and simply walk away from the United States. The same reason that the British couldn't control the United States by force will keep an American general from becoming Army-appointed Royalty, its too big.
