House of Stuart goes extinct before Restoration

The idea here is simple. All the Stuarts, between the execution of Charles I in 1649 to 1659/1660, all died before they could have a chance to return to power after the death of Cromwell. (Say Charles II is killed following Worcester, etc.)

What is the fate of England, Scotland and Ireland? Could the Commonwealth survive? Or would they just find a new royal to come and become king?

Too many heirs for the whole family to be extinguished (even if the direct male Stuart line is gone). More than likely Elizabeth Stuart (actually born before Charles I) becomes Queen Regnant and her husband (who just lost Bohemia and was a champion of the "Protestant" cause) rules with her. She has many children (including Prince Rupert who fought in the Civil Wars and was well known to the English and future Electress Sophia from whom the present Royal House descend).

Or Monck just names himself Lord Protector instead of playing Kingmaker.

That does sound more possible and more interesting.
