Something I've been pondering lately is what might the fate of Scotland and the United Kingdom in general might have been if David II Bruce King of Scotland from 1329-1371 had had a son, or sons to carry on the Bruce family.

David's reign was plagued by this issue, his marriage to Joan of England was without issue, and his second marriage to Margaret Drummond was also without issue, and as such he continually tried to name a son of Edward III as his heir, something Scotland rejected out right.

Upon his death, his nephew Robert the Steward succeeded him as Robert II, bringing in the Stuart Dynasty. What I wonder is what if David II had had a son or sons from either his first or second marriage, what might this have changed?

Obviously it is likely that in this scenario the Stewarts never gain the throne, and remain stewards, yet Robert's sons were trouble makers and they were growing in number. Would the Bruce family have eventually gotten a more straight forward claim to the English throne, would they unite the two kingdoms?
