September 9th, 1974--The superstar two-year-old filly Ruffian, who won the Sorority Stakes this past Saturday in record time of 1:09 flat, was un-injured after the race, contrary to published reports, said her trainer, Frank Whiteley, today.

After a spot of blood was seen on her leg following her win in the Sorority, X-rays were taken, but they revealed no injury. Her next start is expected to be taking on the leader of the two-year-old colt division, Foolish Pleasure, in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont, a one-mile race to be run on October 5th.

October 6th, 1974--In a brilliant, dazzling display, the two-year-old filly Ruffian stamped herself the best two-year-old horse of either sex in the land yesterday, as she destroyed previously unbeaten colt Foolish Pleasure in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park in stakes record time of 1:33 4/5.

Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure ran as a team through a quarter mile in :22 1/5 and a half-mile in :45 2/5. Ruffian had a one-length lead as they passed the quarter pole in 1:09 flat, and she opened steadily after that to her final winning margin of seven lengths under a hand ride by Jacinto Vasquez.

Her trainer, Frank Whiteley, said after the race that she would now be given a well-deserved rest before being brought back to the races early next year. When asked if she would be aimed for the Triple Crown races, Whiteley replied that he would have to consult with her owners, Barbara and Stuart Janney, but that they were keeping all options open at this time.

You have a typo in the date. It would be 1974, not 1975.

March 17, 1975--The trainer of the champion 3-year-old filly Ruffian announced today that she would take on colts in the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack on April 12th.

Ruffian, who was unbeaten in seven races as a two-year-old, including a smashing victory against colts in the Champagne Stakes, has been and is the current advance book favorite for the Kentucky Derby, the first time a filly has ever been so. She has won her two races this year, against fillies, by a total of 23 lengths, setting stakes records in both in the process.

Her trainer and owners had been noncommittal about whether the big black filly would be pointed towards the Triple Crown races, but the crescendo of fans opinions and those in the press has only increased with each dazzling workout or romp in a race.
