World leaders have gathered at the United Nations General Assembly today to mark the start of the momentous Millennium Summit. General Secretary Kofi Annan opened the summit by observing a minute of silence for the UN workers recently killed in West Timor. This was followed by pleas for peace by US President Clinton and the new Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
Among the issues discussed today at the Millennium Summit, attempts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflicts and to reform UN peacekeeping forces featured at the top of the agenda. Also being discussed by analysts is the absence of the North Korean delegation, which is boycotting the event in protest over it's delegates being searched by airport officials upon their arrival in the US, as well as the sudden withdrawal of the Afghan delegation at the last minute, with "security concerns" being cited as the cause of the sudden cancellation of the Afghan delegates attendance.
