Horace Austin Invades Canada

When the men who attempted to kidnap Lord Gordon-Gordon to bring him to trial for swindling Jay Gould were in turn captured and imprisoned in Canada without bail, Minnesota governor Horace Austin demanded they be returned. When Canada refused, Austin ordered the Minnesota militia mobilized and put into a state of full readiness, with thousands of Minnesotans volunteering for a military expedition into Canada. Crisis was averted when Canada gave in and had the kidnappers released on bail.

What if Canada had refused to do so and the governor, or some rogue militia commander, decided to mount an invasion to free them?

Well for one it would be a HUGE diplomatic shitstorm between the US, Canada and Britain. I think it depends on what Washington and Ottawa do and WHO exactly invades. If its the Governor, then the US is in some serious hot water, with Britain threatening a blockade, Canada no doubt threatening to break off trade, and a slew of other problems. With that scenario, the US would be in a delicate position. Can the Federal government arrest a Governor for invading another country? Considering that's never came up before it will be interesting to see how it unfolds. If its a rogue commander or a few dozen/hundred militiamen, then they'll be disavowed, arrested and a few will be made an example of to keep diplomatic tensions down. I doubt you would see a full scale war, as its not even a decade sense the Civil war and Britain is mainly involved in Egypt and India at this point.
