Hoover is history

U.S. President-elect Herbert Hoover visited Argentina in December 1928. Giovanni wanted to bomb Hoover's train in revenge for the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti, but the bomber, Alejandro Scarfó, was detained a short time before putting the explosives on the rails.

WI Scarfo had had time to plant the bomb and kill Hoover? And please, none of that US attacks Argentina nonsense, I'm not in the mood.

Now that is a fascinating question because Charles Curtis was a fascinating character. One big question is would he have vetoed the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act? My guess is that he would have gone with his party but he was much better equipped than Hoover to influence Congress.

Believe it or not, Curtis was even more of a protectionist than Hoover so the Tariff would have been right up his alley and he would have signed off on it in an instant. IIRC Curtis' proposals for dealing with the Great Depression involved such nonsense as "work sharing" and increased tariffs. I doubt Curtis is any better equipped to deal with the Depression than Hoover.

With the assassination of a US President in Latin America you might see the US being forced to maintain a bit more of an interventionist policy there through the 1930's.

Where it really gets interesting is in the 1932 Republican primaries. Do the electors get over the issue of Curtis' race (he was 1/8th Native American) and his bungling of the past 3 years and nominate him as a sacrificial lamb? There's probably a stronger lobby in TTL for Coolidge to run again but knowing Silent Cal he wouldn't take the nomination. Leaving who?

Who but the incumbent would want it?
