Hong Kong (70s, 80s & 90s) discussion - or; "for wont of a handover"

Is it possible for Britain to negotiate with China about not handing Hong Kong back at any point? That'd be the only way to pull off not giving it back without a lot of military buildup in the area and deliberately risking nuclear war. And that would still require China to not change their mind later.

Or for Hong Kong not to become independent and then China casually walks in.

It's a tall order.

There was a proposal by a British governor of Hong Kong, IIRC around 1909, to giv back to China then concesion in Weihaiwei in exchange for changing New Territories lease into full UK ownership.

The New Territorries has to be ceded in perpetuity.. a la gilbrator. China would demand the return one day, maybe around the return of macau but uk has a bigger claim to refuse.

Hong kong needs to have more british in hk than otl.

The moral disaster in ww2 did not happen or less severe. Uk somehow retains influence in its asian colonies.

Hk did not double its population overnight because of the civil war. Hk has a much lower population than otl and require much less import in food and water than otl.

maybe.. just some random ideas.
