In OTL Cyrus agreed to surrender but the Byzantines did not like it, so they got rid of him as governor of Egypt, So when the Arabs invaded Egypt the Romans had little support. So in this tl at the Roman for of Pelusium the brilliant general Artenius poisons Cyrus thus leading to his death and a puppet becoming Coptic Priest, so ARtenius sets up defenses and prepares his army and holds Pelusium against Amr and his invasion force of 4000 troops. In late december 639 Artenius and Cyrus met at the Byzantine fortress town of
Perelusium, for some time Cyrus had been advocating a strong surrender option. Artenius was to execute Cyrus. At the headquarters the two were having dinner, Artenius smiled soon he would be the governor of Roman Egypt. Soon Drinks were placed and the two toasted. Suddenly Cyrus started coughing, " I have been poisoned, Artenius you dammed fool."

We need your help, every able bodied man, woman and child will be given weapons and training to defend the city. These Arabs are not human, suddenly he held up a portrait an Arab was laughing as he cooked a Christian baby, the Heathens eat babies and roast Christian alive they are greedy misers, who slaughter all in their path, mark my words if this city falls then you all will be enslaved, killed, beatean, eatean, and raped." the people wept and scremed as panic ensued. However their is an alternative join the army and we can win. Many people cheered they would give up their lives in battle then suffer the horrible death that was coming. Artenius ordered a moat to be constructed around the city, a bout 2000 men woman and children dug around the city and due to the massive number if people a moat was finished within a week, another week it was filled with water and filled with crocodiles, Nile snakes, poisonous eels, various deadly creatures were dumped into the moat. Young camels were brought who soon led the people to water, most of These wells were houses but Artenius ordered the houses taken down and the materials used for building extra defenses, soon many wells popped up around the city, at the various manors the. Nobles were stripped off their homes which soon turned into farms, many nobles resented their plight but could do little for those e
who protested were condemned as heathean helpers and killed. Thus the whole city became one big fortress complete with wells, farms and a massive moat outside. Artenius used the stone from the rubble to fashion
weapons and shields which were then doled out to the populace and nearly all 10000
inhabitants of the city were drilled in military maneuvors and etc by the garrison. Within a month by January the city was a huge fortress armed to the teeth and self sustainable. Artenius now awaited the oncoming arabs. Amr had jus recently convinced the calph about invasion and soon confident his 4000 man army rode out to egypt and take the first city on thei path Pelesium. They did not realize how outnumbered they were. Many consider Artenius to be a genius but others hold mixed feelings, he was a brilliant manipulator who used propaganda to it's fullest extent, now his atrocities are Many but many Romans agree that without him Egypt would have fallen. After the Rashiduns were defeated this hypocrite as many call him welcomed Amr and gave him food, women and gifts, praising his brilliance, Amr left never having been shown such goodwill he soon left and decided to leave Egypt alone. Artenius was a cunning manipulator who soon rose up to become the advisor to heraclius and gained a lot of power. Artenius was known throughout as having truly deserved the title Artenius I the great Extarch of Egypt
