Just read in an MHQ article yest bout Bragadin's epic defence of Famagusta in 1571 against overwhelming ottoman forces, and how the Spanish-Italian fleet sent to relieve him that Oct were actually so at each other's throats- before the Battle of lepanto- that the Spanish and Italian ships on 1 occasion aimed their guns at each other and threatened to blow each other out of the water (!) They were only saved from further disunity degrading into open conflict when a couple days later they sighted a Venetian frigate just come from Famagusta which relayed the full horror of what had happened to the Ventian defenders and the flaying alive of Bragadin as their commander- which news steeled the resolve of all the Holy league sailors and soldiers, so that, desiring revenge for famagusta, they sailed into battle and inflicted the crushing victory on the Ottomans at Lepanto.
However, WI the tensions amongst the Holy League fleet had reached the point where they actually did degenerate into open fighting between the different contingents ? Say if that fugitive Venetian firgate from Famagusta hadn't been sighted ? How much more would Ottoman supremacy have been maintained in the Med, and with what greater consequences ?
