Hitler dies 9-2-39

Hitler dies in his sleep in the wee hours of September 2, 1939.
First, who takes over? How is this decided? What other personnel changes in the Nazi hierarchy are there?
Second, how does this affect the war?

Well Hitler did say in his address to the Reichstag on September 1 that if anything happened to him, Goering would take over, and if anything happened to Goering, then Hess would take over.

My understanding is that Goering was a fat drug-addicted drunk. War ends in 1944? maybe even 1943? Maybe something happens to him and the Reich gets Hess?

oh no, no, no. Goring was the one who had most respect from the army and the politicians. He was the soldier, the skill(or so they thought). Therefor, he will try to make it political, perhaps come to an understanding with the British and French. He won't make it as bad a Hitler will i think. He listens better. He was still a giant ego though, but more egocentric than a megalomaniac.

Hess on the otherh and was a coward(referring to the flight to the UK), a pacifist. His fear will make him a much worse leader, not because he would back off the further aggression, but he will make even worse moves when feeling cornered.

Goring was more conservative. I think you would have seen a contained war. Germany either backs off -- invades -- 1940 goes forward -- France defeated -- GB settles or is minimized -- no invasion of Russia

UK and France demands Göring to withdraw from Poland. He would refuse-it is to late. Then France and UK declare war like IOTL.

Göring used mophine and put on a lot of weight during stressful times of his life and lost weight and reduced his drug use quite a bit during better times. He was quite sharp during the Nuremberg trials since he was weaned off morphine in prison and lost a ton of weight.

This shows how much weight he lost during his time in prison.

Göring was not the fat drug-addicted drunk he would become later early war:

The question is how Göring deals with the responsibility - gaining weight and doing more drugs or manning up. He could go both ways, but I suspect the former (Hitler constantly increased his drug abuse after all).
