Hitler Dead August September 1940

Could a lucky bomb have killed the monster? Would that have been worse for humanity?

If Hitler died in August/September 1940, then there will be no Barbarossa. Goering would succeed him, most likely, as per Hitler's wishes. Goering wasn't a big fan of launching Barbarossa in the first place (though he did support it after it had begun). Goering will likely invest in a Mediterranean Strategy. He knows the limitations of the Luftwaffe, and he'll know that Sealion won't be feasible since the LW can't get air superiority over southern England. With more resources to the Med, reaching the Suez Canal might just be doable. What happens from there depends on what the US and the Soviets do and whether or not the allies will insist on unconditional surrender ITTL as they did IOTL.

The Med is tricky, they really have to wait for the Italians to screw it up. Plus he'd need to see that the greatest need would be in infrastructure development, railroads and port facilities and such.

What if the Germans sent Tolt organization construction crews in instead of troops? Help improve logistics.

In 1940 Goring was heavily into drugs, his reign might not be long.Somebody would take him out.Worst case Reinhard Hydrich takes out Himmler and with the support of Joseph Goobles (they were the real brains of the outfit) take out Goring.

That would help immensely, as would sending someone who could figure out how to take Tobruk in 1941, rather than constantly attacking in the wrong places. So a different 1941 might see Tobruk retaken and the Halfaya Pass secure, giving operation Todt the stability to start making the necessary improvements. The only problem then becomes the economy.

A Mediterranean strategy was never going to work with a POD this late. The logistics were just impossible because there were finite chokepoints in the supply chain the Germans couldn't alleviate, especially port and road capacity. They shipped over the maximum amount of supplies and men they could in OTL because they just couldn't fit any more through the gate.

Sending in Todt laborers to alleviate that is perfectly good but then you don't have as many soldiers there and it gets rolled up fairly easily. With a POD after Mussolini has entered the war Italian Africa is meat on the table. It probably was in any event but that late, definitely.

However, having this massive waste of resources trimmed through quick defeat actually benefits the Axis because they don't keep throwing good money after bad for so long, grinding up EVERYTHING worthwhile in the Italian armed forces and inflicting a Stalingrad level defeat on the Heer.

Fascism gets a better reputation than otl as Goering might be willing to consolidate over attack Russia and details of final solution were not set in stone yet. Goering might rely too much on Wehrmacht which thus sidelines the SS.

......unless Himmler takes over and initiates the holocaust and operation Barbarossa.

Heydrich might escape unpunished unfortunately through as he was very pragmatic and smart and weasel his way into the Wehrmacht.
