Historical Recap Project

I've been on this site for a year, but I still don't know a lot about certain parts of history. There are a few things I'm very knowledgeable in, but lots of parts are still murky for me. However, a couple months ago I found this page on the wiki. Groucho used to write very detailed historical recaps, but he stopped after the 5th Century. I thought that it might be a good idea to bring them back, but as a collaborative project this time. Everyone willing to participate could write about their own knowledgeable part of history.

Why would it be good to have? Well, it would give people a direct source for timelines, one they know is reliable. It would probably be an aggregate of multiple sources, and hopefully unbiased.

How would it work? People choose a time period and a region, then divide the period into a bunch of smaller events. Like Grouchio did, it would probably end up being a bunch of smaller posts, but adding up to a lot of words. I mean, it'll be the people's choice of what they really want to include.

What time periods would be picked? Well, I'd personally choose Europe from the 7th to 9th centuries. I'd probably make a bunch of posts on the spread of Islam, the rise of the Vikings, Charlemagne, the like.

There'd obviously be no actual responsibility to continue everything, this is just an idea I have. I think it would work really well as a source, and it wouldn't be too hard if you're just pasting stuff. You wouldn't be forced to write thousands of words, but if you're passionate about it it'd be a good place to write everything down. Would anyone be willing to at least claim a time period, and then maybe write a few updates about what happened?

I personally would recommend a recap project regarding links to books and websites and nothing more. That old recap project was rife with bad journalist professionalism and I'm not proud of it.

Mmm, that's understandable. I personally think that having a more unbiased amalgamation might work, but I definitely understand that too. Even so, this thread should still be used to gather sources. :)

So, a kind of Althistory.com JSTOR?

Sign. Me. Up.

There should also be a feature where peopel can suggest new books, and admins can review them to make sure that they're suitably professional and accurate

I jave some Canadian History Books I can recommend. Although it won't be untill tonight after work since I can't remember them.

Question: What is tge cut off point for modern history and present. Is the past 5 years present or the past 10 years? Basically how soon is to soon?

I like this idea.

I could do something on the Roman times (kingdom, republic and empire) or something on military history. The last one is my true passion.

So. How does this work? Is a new thread being made or are we just writing down book titles and authors or are we going with the original idea?

I am confused.... again.

Definitely! I'd be happy to read and check books for credibility. :)

No cut-off point, it can be a summary of Euromaidan for all I care. XD

Feel free! I'd love to learn about Roman history, so write as much as you want! Post it here whenever you're ready. :)

I think we can do both. We can have summaries and book links, both will be extremely helpful if done right.

I want in!

Maybe we can make PRE-Historical Recaps? I'm a big fan of describing the Human Evolutionary process!
Yes, begin writing please! :D

TBVH if people are interested they have academic books (Harvard East Asian Monographs for example). Really I don't see why this project would be any more reliable than Wikipedia.

I concur with the intransigent southerner. It wouldn't be amy more reliable than a wiki and frankly I'd prefer just lists of sources for obscure topics.
