Hillary loses in 2000

What if Hillary lost New York senate race in 2000? Say New York Republicans managed to nominate a stronger candidate then Lazio who manages to successfully paint her as a carpetbagger. Maybe Al D'amato runs again or another blue collar candidate from the New York area, maybe someone like Peter King or Ed Koch (who had grown more conservative by then and could have easily switched parties.)

She's certainly no candidate for 2008, and not SecState. (John Kerry would likely get the nod- or Joe Biden.) Obama might have an easier time of running. Sarah Palin would almost certainly not get picked as a VP, and may be forced from office after the Branchflower Report.

As for whoever gets in, hopefully Elizabeth Holtzmann or Jonathan Tasini or someone like them beats them in 2006.

Only real bet for the GOP would be if Giuliani never got prostate cancer and didn't go through his personal difficulties, and then everything in the campaign goes his way. Hilary was too good a campaigner in that race, too well-funded, New York went for Gore in a landslide and it was a strongly pro-Dem year for the Senate. Generic Republican is ultimately going to lose against a Hilary.

I wouldn't write her off completely politically, but she's not going to be talked about as a presidential prospect in such a timeline. 2008 would be very interesting.

In the Giuliani wins scenario that's two candidates out of the 2008 race probably since Rudy won't be mayor on 911 and gain that kind of publicity.

Politicians were running into NYC like 18 year olds to the Kegger there first night at college. He would have capitalized on it, not quite as much, but was already a bigger national figure than Pataki was and as a NY Senator he would have played it up big time.

She'd run for another elected office after the loss. I don't think she'd go away that easy, maybe she'd run for office in Arkansas? Heck maybe she, not Obama runs for the senate in her home state of Illinois in 2004, although that might be stretching it.
