Mexican President Herrera prior to the Mexican-American War put forward a territorial compromise:
1) Mexico would recognize the US annexation of Texas
2) The boundary would be set along the Nueces and Pecos Rivers
3) A line from the Rio Grande to the Pacific at the 37th parallel would also serve as the Mexican-American border
What if Mexico and the United States had agreed to this compromise? Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leone, and Tamaulipas would maintain territorial integrity and Mexico would keep the Monterrey Bay.
The United States has its annexation of Texas recognized and makes large western gains without a war.
What if this had gone through? Polk gets to claim a win but is likely fuming that he hasn't gained much more territory for slavery. Dixiecrats likely push harder for an annexation of Cuba or Yucatan (the latter's annexation treaty having historically passed the House but failed in the Senate due to there already being a war going on).
