Hemp for Victory: 70s/80s edition

Industrial Hemp is currently grown in Canada and Europe but not in the United States.

Allegedly, hemp is a super-product capable of being made into anything and although not all these uses are cost-effective (who wants to pay ~10x as much for paper). Imagine a technological situation where in an *Energy Crisis the US pours funding into hemp the way it did into solar and wind energy. Keep in mind that hemp already had many known uses by 1970s just not all cost-effective ones. Where would we be now? Would global warming still be an issue? If the POD requires writing off the counterculture (and all the good music that came out of it), that's a price I'm willing to pay.

I means, I am against the rightwing's war on pot, but the claims some proponents of hemp and pot push are... doubtious to me, pseudoscientifical sounding even, or conspirationist.

If it was really miracle, how the genius would be kept bottled for so long?

sorry for tangency.

Well Ford developed a car with hemp-plastic body panels in the early '40s, so maybe if he'd marketed it after the war rather than throwing it on the scrap-heap...

Well most plastics are made from petro-chemicals so if the 70's oil crisis continued long enough or OPEC over plays its hand.

American is a proud nation, a strong nation that has stood firm against depression, fascism and communism. We will not go cap in hand to beg for oil, our forefathers did not fight a war for indepedence only to have us sign it away to OPEC. This is a nation of Ideals, Ideas and Innovators that will show the world it can thrive without foreign oil. In the factories of Detroit we will built better fuel efficent engines for ours cars to run on oil from Texas, Alaska and Louisanna. Tennesse Coal and the mighty power of the atom will power these factories and light up our towns and cities. American science and industrial knowledge can already create plastics from Hemp, Corn, Peanuts and other crops.

USA President address to the following the collapse of major oil producing nations into anti-american Islamist and communist states the so called Arab Winter.

Banned
I know hemp has lots of uses, you mentioned cheaper paper as one. In a world where scientists can create most materials synthetically and where paper use is on the sharp decline, I don't see hemp as a really in need resource. I think the ban on it is silly, but I don't see any real impact from it. Now if you know of research where hemp is the key over looked for years to make cold fusion work, great! Otherwise, its no miracle cure all, that allows cars to get 200mph and end world hunger while curing both cancer and aids.

I have serious doubts the US embracing hemp solves many major problems. The paper industry is probably different...
