Help: Lincoln survives: Old short story.

I'm wondering if anybody knows of this story, at least 30 years old, and probably more.

All I can remember is that Lincoln has survived the assassination; he is now an old man but his Presidency is long behind him, and his second term didn't go too well. The story is written by a young aide, and the mood is melancholic, and somewhat bitter. The only other thing I remember is the semi-joking nickname his assistants have for him is "the Shogun."

I read it before I knew about AH or much about Lincoln- I don't think they even mention his name.
No idea of title or author. Ring any bells?

I went nuts trying to remember this myself a few years ago. It's The Lost Years, by Oscar Lewis, published in 1951.

Thanks,it was bugging me too- that's a lot older than I thought. Remembered some details wrong- it apparently was set right after his second term.

I don't remember what recalled it to my mind recently. I had first read it sometime in the late 60s in a collection of science fiction stories, and didn't remember much more about it than you did. Now that I think about it, it was probably the first AH story I'd ever read, and apparently made enough of an impression on me that I still remembered it forty years later.
