Help: Did Angevins or French own huge chunk of France?

It's a question of hats. Various of the Angevin dynasty held the yellow territory. The territory on the continent was mainly held wearing the "hats" of Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, and Duke of Brittany. The Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, and Duke of Aquitaine were vassals of the King of France and officially held those lands in trust from him. The Duke of Brittany was sovereign, paying homage to nobody for his lands. The Lord of Ireland paid homage to the King of England, and of course the King of England was sovereign.

It just so happened that the King of England just happened to be the Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, and (jure uxoris*) Duke of Aquitaine, one of his sons was (jure uxoris) Duke of Brittany, and another one of his sons was Lord of Ireland. And later, his sons inherited various combinations of those titles from him.

(*) "By right of wife" -- the actual Duchy of Aquitaine was held by Elanor of Aquitaine, but her husband ruled in her name because marriage merged their property under his control.

In theory, the King of France was superior to the King of England in his French lands. In practice, however, he had a lot of ability to resist attempts by France to exert power over him, so long as his vassals stayed loyal to him. The history of this period in England and France is dominated by a series of shifting alliances between Henry II of England, his wife and sons, Philip II of France, and all of their respective vassals. At any given point in time, de facto control of any given territory depended a lot on whose soldiers were on it and who was taking orders from whom this particular week.
