Heart of (Semi) Darkness

Although many African countries are tied to Europe through economic help (neo-colonialism in general), could European imperial powers such as Britain and France still have colonies in Africa? This might be achievable if once the Europeans arrived in Africa they took more care in dividing up the continent and in general were gentler in the whole process. While still imperialism, it wouldn't be as strong.

My main question is this: could Africa still be under European control if during colonization the Europeans were nicer and smarter (more strategic, subtler)? Any thoughts on this?

Not sure how much gentleness is really going to make up for people not particularly wanting to remain second class citizens in an empire that exists to exploit them and the resources of their area forever.

And eliminating that is eliminating why the powers that be had colonies in the first place - at best they were intended to be economically used for the good of the conqueror as the first priority, at worst that was the only concern.
