Hawaii With No Alaska?

So, assuming a POD of Seward's death in 1865 and no Alaskan Purchase, would Hawaii still have been annexed by the United States? Would some other power have colonized it? Would it remain as a puppet state or protectorate of the US instead of becoming a territory? Heck, could it remain independent?

Any of these things are possible, TBH. Just need the right PODs. ;)

I'm just curious whether Alaska had any impact on American expansionism, or if they were going to get Hawaii anyways.

the US getting Hawaii isn't guaranteed.

However Given that Alaska wasn't really seen as useful until the 1896 gold rush, and the Monarchy getting overthrown happened in 1893, I don't think No Alaska is going to have a huge affect on American interest in Hawaii.

Alaska was more a case of a good deal for extra, if not mostly useless (remember Alaska was useless resource-wise until the beginning of the 20th century) land.

Hawai'i was a case of useful islands that the U.S. had had an interest in (to one degree or another) for awhile and which would be useful for the Pacific-oreitned economic and diplomatic policies of the time.

In other words, assuming the only PoD is America not buying/getting Alaska, then their's little reason why it would lead to America not getting Hawai'i.

While it would have been nice that Hawaii had never been annexed by the United States, I don't see there being much of an impact on the history of things had Alaska not be annexed nearly 30 years earlier. Tho there were a lot of things in Hawaii that were labeled '49th state' in anticipation of statehood.
