"Have it your way" Truman doesn't fire MacArthur

Suppose President Harry Truman hadn't fired General MacArthur during the Korean War. He'd stay popular but a new dangerous conflict could arise with China.....

What I couldn't figure out was why the general public ignored Truman's reasons for firing MacArthur -- spreading the war into Manchuria part of China. Did the public understand what dangerous actions MacArthur was taking?

At that time we had a huge nuclear advantage over the Russians and the ability to deliver. They had virtually none. so they would sit it out. The Chinese had a mass of infrantry and not much more. Actually pounding the supply lines across the Yalu would have done a lot to hamstring them.

You're assuming the Soviets would back down. Militarily, that'd make sense for them, but politically?

But in any case, no, the US can't lose, even if they do join, unless it's handicapped by singularly stupid policymakers.

But later on we risk retaliation of some type. Condemnation by international leaders, perhaps sanctions?

Truman's presidency would still take a hit from the unions but his chances for re-election in 1952 are better....
