During the American War of Independence, French Diplomat Charles Gravier comte de Vergennes proposed a peace treaty to the British that would allow them to keep large swaths of the Old Northwest, Maine, New York City, and Savannah. The American diplomats responded to this by demanding the British to reject the treaty and deal with them directly as the United States of America. The British gave the Americans what they wanted and hope that it would break up the French-American Alliance. But what would happen if the British took Vergennes offer instead?
