Harry Reid as President of United States

What would have taken for Harry Reid to have become the President of the United States some time in the 1990s?

His Mormonism might be a big obstacle. It might even sink him in the Democratic primary. So I think you need a POD at least in college when, IIRC, he converted. One that gives him more charisma and a more upbeat speaking style would help too.

His Mormonism would have an impact, especially among the liberals in his party. He would also be hurt by the fact that one group he might count on (other Mormons) would NOT be too keen to support him because he's far more liberal than they are on average. So, he'd suffer for being perceived as both too conservative (by liberal democrats) and too liberal (by Mormons and many other conservatives).

Thankfully, I can't think of many ways he could wind up as President -- I shudder at the thought.
