Harper blows it

An interesting fact about Canadian politics (especially in the last thirty years or so is that we tend to swing to the right or left with the States: hence, reagan gets in -> we elect Mulrooney; Clinton gets in -> we turf Campbell; Bush II gets in -> we elect Harper. So, with that in mind, what happens if the Conservatives (for whatever reason, stupidity probably having to rank in the top three) decide to delay holding the election, so that voting day takes place after November 3rd? Who wins then?

It seems like it would be a bit too much of a turnaround for your Liberals to get in. If the effect you suggest does exist, I suspect it would only be that the status quo is maintained rather than Harper picking up some seats.

Probably true.

But I'm betting the Conservatives would go from "drifting left" to "making an all-out dash for the centre" in that case.

I doubt it. The biggest advantage the Conservatives had was the fact that the opposition was divided, broke and has poor leaders. The NDP is too far to the left to get elected and they won't change that, and the Liberals have a leadership deficit and a major money problem. Harper threw away a majority because of some dumb comments he made.

"Green Shift" idea could get some very major bust from signs of America's sudden willingness to move in that direction (Obama's musing about "carbon markets"). Couple that with the fact that some worst stock market carnage happened after Oct. 14, I would say that Liberal minority is very likely, no matter where Harper would dash.

Edit: we'll have an opportunity to prove your right. It is unlikely that next federal elections will be after 2012 and Dion was Harper's one-a-lifetime chance to beat Liberals. And Harper could not do it.

The easiest way for the OP to work is that he would have to stick by his own election rules and have the election some time in 2009 (you know, the "fixed dates" and all that?).

two words JUSTIN TRUDEAU, he is practically a celebrity, son of the most liberal of liberal PM's.

he is the favorite win the Liberal leadership race, behind Ignatiaf (sp?). If Trudeau wins leadership, I think even people in alberta will vote for him.

Alberta voting for Trudeau? RCAFB, we need you here...

I'll cover for him until he arrives: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

...*wipes tears from eyes* honestly, they'd sooner vote for a hydrocephalic antelope.

I agree. Not going to happen. Gerard Kennedy, Bob Rae, or Ignatyev, OTOH, . . . . . . .

Of course I had to be at work today when this came up... The others have already got the reply though. Zyzzyva's was spot on. Hell will freeze over before people in Alberta vote for a political party led by a Trudeau. Pierre Trudeau almost single handedly destroyed the Liberal Party's chances in Alberta, and that party is still toast here nearly 30 years later. The only Liberal MPs to get re-elected following Trudeau's NEP were those who were personally popular, and they could be counted on one hand, in a province that had before then had traditionally supported the Liberal party, at least at the federal level. (The provincial Liberals got turfed sometime around WWI, and haven't been let back into power since.) If the Liberals were to find someone to lead them who is not tied to the previous Liberal governments, and who is known to be honest, (or at least somewhat less dishonest than most politicians are), and who is not someone who will simply use Alberta or "The West" as a scapegoat like so many federal politicians have in the past, then they might have a chance to start winning seats in Alberta again.

BTW, Justin Trudeau is not running for the leadership of the Liberal party at this time, thank God. Just imagine the shitstorm in both Alberta and Quebec if he were to. There is also a good reason that the Mulroney Tories swept Quebec in 1984... And in 1988... And that the BQ has been the dominant political party in that province, at the federal level anyways, since 1993.
