The topic of what might happen if Harold Godwinson won the Battle of Hastings has gained enough threads to fill Harold's grave. Today, I'm curious as to what possible fate might await Edgar the Atheling, the last direct male descendant of Alfred the Great and Athelstan. IOTL, he was briefly acclaimed King by the Witenagamot, then fled north with his mother and sisters and made at least two unsuccessful attempts to regain the throne.
Before Hastings, Harold had made Edgar Earl of Oxford, thus giving him a possible powerbase. It's generally agreed that a Harold Godwinson who has just defeated two successive invasions would be safe in the short-term. But in the long term, there might be some who want to see the House of Godwin toppled. Say, Edwin and Morcar.
One TL I read on this site had Edgar assassinated. Harold might also try to control Edgar and his sisters by either:
1. Marrying one of his daughters to Edgar.
2. Marrying one of his elder sons to Margaret of Cristina of Wessex.
3. Both.
Any thoughts?
