Hard Thought and Hard Work: A Collaborative Humphrey wins '68 TL

“If there is dissatisfaction with the status quo, good. If there is ferment, so much the better. If there is restlessness, I am pleased. Then let there be ideas, and hard thought, and hard work. If man feels small, let man make himself bigger.”

- Hubert Humphrey

November 5th 1968: Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds against him, Vice President, Hubert Humphrey, will become the 37th President of The United States.

George Wallace (AI-AL)/ Curtis Lemay (AI-CA) - 39 EVS/ 13% PV

* The Point Of Divergence is that Nixon and Humphrey agree to threes debate with each other on ABC, NBC, and CBS, respectively, in one debate, Humphrey quips, "for every policeman and jail Mr. Nixon builds, I will build a house and hire a teacher." Nixon then is seen rolling his eyes. In another debate, when the candidates are asked what they've done, Humphrey flawlessly lists his work on education, healthcare, and ending poverty, Nixon then stumbles on his rebuttal.

Well had the dubious contacts on behalf of Nixon with the South Vietnamese government come out that would have given Humphrey a comfortable victory. Then too Agnew's crimes might have come out in October 68
