Grand Duke Leopold II was a fairly liberal leader of Tuscany, allowing a degree of free press and going along with a liberal constitution before Austria forced him to backtrack.
What if in 1848, Leopold managed to finagle his way into uniting the Hapsburg and Hapsburg-dominated polities in Central Italy into a single Grand Duchy (or Kingdom) of Central Italy?
I'm thinking it has the same boundaries as the United Provinces of Central Italy.
