Hanoi By Christmas

I'm actually developing this scenario as an alternate history news paper article
Essentially its a Market Garden style operation in Vietnam involving a large airborne drop behind enemy lines and a vital linkup between the airborne forces and the armored units driving north. "Hanoi by Christmas."
Discounting the Russian and the Chinese factors, let's take them out of the picture could this invasion plan succeed at the height of the war in 1967-68?
What units? What strength? Logistics? Resupply? Jump-off site.

Read To Go In Boldly Amongst Them The Invasion of North Vietnam with a pod of 1970. I seriously don't know if a Market Garden style operation would work for the invasion of the North. Operation MG failed the first time, how would it be different a second time?
Unless you were to work out the kinks of the first.

It's funny you should mention that. A few pages back should be "The Invasion of North Vietnam, 1970."

Basically, the PoD I came up with was that instead of the invasion of Cambodia and Laos, Nixon orders an incursion across the DMZ to draw out the North Vietnamese Army into a conventional battle to weaken them and give the South Vietnamese time to build their defense.

As far as units...you've got the 101st, 82nd, and the Airborne Brigade, and you've also probably got the 1st Cavalry, of course. I'll have to think about it further. To be honest, I'd kind of gone beyond it, so I'll have to go back to some of the books I've got.
