Hamilton/Burr Question

Hey guys, i was wondering your thoughts and an idea i've been mulling over. it's over the Hamilton/Burr incident. what i was thinking was that what if the gun that Burr got either misfired or the sight was off and Burr missed or hit him but nothing vital, hense not killing Hamilton. Hamilton was using this to destroy Burr, what would the repercussions be?

Probably better economic policy. I'll bet you that Hamilton would have argued strongly against the Jeffersonian embargo, leaving New England in better economic shape.

This, of course, might have stopped New England's secession in the War of 1811. I don't think it would have changed things in the long run, though-- we're too different than those slaveholding American Jackals. Eventually the southward expansion of the United States (taking slavery with it) would have sent New England packing. The Second American Revolution would have no doubt been bloodier, and New England's position more precarious in the event that it won independence. Who knows what the implications of that would be... that's a whole different thread. :)

Actually, WI Hamilton returns to the military during that war, assuming he lives that long when not killed by Burr...

Maybe Burr's goals here could be different from OTL?

Burr's intentions are unknowable. He kept no paper records and confided very little in very few people. In fact, we know him chiefly through Madison's diary and a few court transcripts.

Hamilton and Jefferson had already destroyed Burr. His actions in the short term are unlikely to be any different from OTL. And it's unlikely that he feels any NEED to kill Hamilton, now that honor has been satisfied and the duel conducted. Hamilton will relent after 1 shot. Burr will come back on stage only years later, as an oldman, presuming he makes up with various people, Hamiltonincluded, which is not impossible.

The more interesting and important half of the question...whither Hamilton? His own papers suggest that he actually regarded Burr as in the right...he had destroyed a patriot, statesman and countryman with slander, and the challenge from Burr made him confront the consequences of immoderate and untrue speech. The Federalist Party, though, still regards Hamilton as its saint and leader. Where will he lead it?
