Hamilton as President

Firstly do you think he would have wanted to run. Secondly do you think his running would be contested seeing as he was born in the Caribbean. And thirdly what kind of president would he be, would people like him. What would he do?

I'm not even sure he was eligible to run. He was born in the British West Indies, not part of the United States, and he wasn't born to U.S. citizens. If you think Obama is iligitamit, then Hamilton is even more so.

(btw: I'm not a birther)

I'll take the bait, even though you should try the search function...

1. Yes, but after the Mariah Reynolds affair and particularly after the election of 1800 it was impossible and I think he knew it.

2. No, there is a clause in the US constitution that says that anyone born in the US when the Constitution was adopted is eligible. If they hadn't put this in no one until Martin Van Buren would have been eligible for the Presidency. That includes Washington-Jackson all were born before 1789. And no the Clause wasn't put in for him, that is one of those Hamilton conspiracy theories that has arisen over time.

3. Assuming he becomes President, his populairity will be dependent upon his decisions. He will push higher tarriffs to boost industry and will push for greater centralization but I don't think his presidency would be an apocalypse that some tend to predict it would be.

Just my two cents.

He would have been dangerous as president - while not personally popular, he had a large political following, and he would have pushed for dictatorship.

I don't think he would have. Remember that Hamilton had the misfortune of dying decades before his main political enemies did. Jefferson and Adams had and used the decades between Hamilton's death and theirs to tar and feather him.

Thanks and remember after Jackson ended the Bank we lost all control over our financial system and went through a massive Panic every 5-8 years until Wilson created the Fed. Reserve.

Uh...none of the first Presidents were natural born citizens nor born in parts of the United States. Washington and Jefferson and Madison were born in the British colony of Virginia. John Adams was born in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. All were British citizens. It's hard to be born a citizen of a nation that doesn't exist.;)

That's what I think, but his enemies might use the fact that since he was not born even in what became the United States he might not be able to. But Hamilton was one of the first Constitutional Lawyers so he would have shot that down.

Hamilton was even more "you're either with me, or you're evil and you're with my enemies" than the recent US President Bush.

Hamilton's also the one who established the precedent that it's not libel if it's true.

Edit: And I'm thinking of the wrong Hamilton.

Was he? I don't see much evidence for this; he didn't like the Alien and Sedition Acts, defended loyalists in court after the Revolution, and made sure Burr didn't end up president.

umm no... he wasn't remember he supported Jefferson and Burr over Adams in the 1800 election. I would say he considered Jefferson pretty bad too. Really read what they said about each other.
