Haiti without the US occupation

What sort of departures from OTL would we expect to see had AH.com's favorite American president :)p) not sent in the US Marine Corps and pretty much run the country for the next twenty years? I'm more interested in the ramifications of possible changes to Haiti's political, cultural, and economic institutions more than the impact on the infrastructural/educational reforms introduced under American occupation.

No suggestions? I thought 20th century American military interventions in Latin America were something of an AH.com specialty.

Well I don't think enough of us know about Haiti's political, cultural and economic institutions during that period (or even today) to make informed speculation on how they would develop without the US intervention.

My rough guess is that Haiti would generally be as it has been for a long time; unstable.

Cuba might have reached out to Haiti if the US had not been there. The moment they did though the US would start meddling again.
