Habsburg Austria survives

Is it possible for Austria to remain a Habsburg Kingdom after losing the First Word War? If so what effect would a surviving Habsburg Austria have on Europe?

I would like that,i am realy fond of the Habsburghs!Could Austria have stayed a monarchy instead of a republich? The history of both Austria and the Habsburghs are much mixed together.

I think ImperialVienna did a timeline on this; with the Archduchy of Austria becoming his timeline's sanest power in Central Europe by World War II.

Anyway, for the Habsburg Monarchy to survive, it must make many concessions, or otherwise have a POD before 1900, as getting rid of Franz Josef and having Maximilian as Emperor could have interesting effects on the Empire's survival.

It could have happened. After WWI, while the US wanted the Hapsburgs gone, the other allies had different priorities and could have accepted them. The US might also have come around if, say, a particularly nasty communist regime had seized power in Vienna and then been overthrown by Hapsburg forces.

It would probably have been more palatable if Charles I had abdicated in favor of his son, Otto.

In the 1930s, I don't think that an Austrian Empire would have been able to resist the Nazis with any more success than the republic did.

[P.S., Otto's still alive; if he had reigned from 1918 without interruption, it would have been the longest reign in history].

A surviving Hapsburg monarchy could surely stopped any project of expansion from Nazi Germany, not only against the same Austria but also againist Checoslovakia. I guess in the end there will be the possibility of a federation between Austria, Hungary, and Checoslovakia, supported by Allies and Italy ( Mussolini could have in mind a Yugoslavian split...). And Hitler will be isolated.

Maybe Hitler at that point could search an alliance with USSR? :D

No.

Well yes, but Franz Joseph needs to die sooner. For during the war the Austrian constitutional order has been grossly violated and Austria functioned as military dictatorship instead of limited democracy. After that it is inevitable that when the military might of the dynasty is crushed the people wil raise against it. For it were people of Austria who destroyed monarchy and not foreign intervention.

An Austro-Bavarian republic postwar would be interesting indeed...

Well, it was brought up before that the French would not levy onto those that broke away from Germany indemnities. While I am not shure if they would be enough to convince the Italians to not take South Tyrol but instead Dalmatia (which the Italians though they would get but went to Yugoslavia instead), then... Ehh, makes no difference though seeing a French Baden of the Rhineland being it's own country would be itnerestin. Try keeping Austria mostly unbroken, however, and including the entirety of Upper Austria and Lower Austria. On an unrelated note, has anyone to your knowlegde down a thread on where only Sophie or the Archduke dies?

I once read, that czarist Russia was willing to preserve the monarchy. So if the CPs loose earlier ...

Other possibilty might be a postwar restoration, if Dollfuß or someone like him manages to stay in power (no Anschluß). Kinda like Franco - Juan Carlos.

An Austro-Bavarian state would be culturally and linguistically similar, so it makes sense, as well as create a viable state that won't be tempted to rejoin Germany later on. A nice bonus too if it prevents a communist state from developing.

The Italians wanted everything, but the only part they could get was South Tyrol. France didn't belong East of Alsace so independent Baden is a no-go.

Earlier CP loss is probably the best chance anyways. Austria would get to keep most of her empire, with some losses to Serbia and Italy (and maybe Romania if they joined), and probably have to concede a Czech. nation (since it was promised by the Entente in 1915), but most of the empire would remain intact.
