H.P lovecrafts mythology as a basis for a religion..

So any ideas on how the lovecraftian mythos could be adapted and expanded into a proper real life religion with actual believers in the likes of Cthulhu, elder things, Outer Gods etc.
POD can be any time from the 30s onward.

Something like the Jedi faith or something more nefarious like Scientology which exists to make money off its believers? Because if the latter, you're gonna need to fuse it with other shit (like LRH's Dianetics) to get a following--just like you don't tell everyone who gets into Scientology about Xenu (not at first), you wouldn't be telling just anyone who gets into this faith about Cthulhu/a knockoff of it.

Something like this perhaps? Utterly nihilistic. Or maybe the various cults in Stross's Laundry series, aiming to gain favour with the Outer Gods/Great Old Ones by hastening their return.

honestly I could see something like this. If Scientology managed to took of why not Chtulhu?

plus in the 30s, esoteric spiritualism was all the craze, so a cult of Chtulhu is very possible.
Though I think the main push back you'd get would be from Lovecraft himself.

You would need a more cohesive exploration of the various eldritch entities to make it work. Lovecraft intentionally left them rather vague and only has them interconnected through the most tenuous of easter eggs or mentions in his other fiction. Fleshing out their cosmology and a sort of theology around their purposes would be essential. Only modern writers have really taken any cracks at that.
