, the datation is a local version of the Anno Mundi system and the language Gutesc, an eastern germanic tongue spoken in eastern Spain.
After the death and the defeat of Euric at Blois in 5980 AM, it seemed as if the Roman Empire could rise again, as it had done at the end of the crisis of the 57th century. The strength of the Restaurator Imperii was illusory, however. The emperor held only Italy, while the rest had fallen to various warlords.
Senator Ecdigius held Auvergn while the British Riothamus ruled in Armoric and the magister militum per Gallias, Syagrius controlled the area around Soisson. Anthemiolus, the Emperor's son governed Aquitania, just taken from the defeated Wisigoths. The only surviving germanic kingdoms, the Sueve in Northern Spain, the Burgondes in eastern Gallia and the large kingdom of the Vandals in Africa recognized the suzerainty of the Emperor... as long as it could enforce it.
When Anthemius was murdered by a slave in 5992, the brittle edifice collapsed. The magister militum per Italias, the Turcling Ögiz apppointed the senator Flavius Glycerius as the new emperor, but he was not recognized by Zeno, the Eastern Emperor, nor by the warlords of the west. Zeno appointed Julius Nepo, the son of Nepotianus, who had been magister militum from 5568 to 5571. He was recognized by Syagrius, Riothamus and the Goths of Spain, but not by Anthemiolus, who proclaimed himself emperor in 5593.
Zeno raised and army against Ögiz and Glycerius but he was murdered as he crossed Illyriaarmy chose his brother Longinus as his successor but in Constantinople the mother of the former emperor Basiliscus rose up and gave the throne to the general Leontius.
An Isaurian, Longinus was not very popular, but he had the support of the army, which was mostly gothic in origin. This enabled him to retake Constantinople in 5595 and to defeat his enemy near Antioch in the beginning of 5596.
Julius Nepo had died at the end of 5595, however, and Zeno, who had to face the attacks of the Goth Lygived did not appoint a successor. When Ögiz and Glycerius were driven out by the Herule Frydric in 5597, the victor did not even bother to appoint a new and proclaimed himself king of Italy. The other warlords did the same and in 6000 only Anthemiolus still claimed the imperial title.
The new kingdoms existed only in names, however. Their overlords controlled the capital but the countryside and the other towns were ruled by the bishops or local warlords who only paid lip service to their authority. The time of the great barbarian kings like Euric was past. The future belonged to the likes of Hengist, king of Kent or his enemy and compatriot Arther, high-general of the Catuvelauni, warlords more than kings, but masters of their small territory.
