Gustavus Adolphus dies in battle - 2 decades too early

In January, 1612, he was beaten back from the walls of Gullberg, where women shared in the defence and the wife of the commandant ordered thirty prisoners to be slain. Next month Gustavus, who bore the chief burden of command, was surprised by Rantzau near Vittsjö, and had an extremely narrow escape from death.

WI the Lion of the North had been killed by the Danes before he could make his mark on Europe?

Either that or his cousin Duke Johan of Östergötland (even though he was childless and formally took himself out of the order of succession 1604 and 1611). I think Sweden would still win against PLC and Russia, but probably not get involved in th 30 years war.

As for a succession crisis, Johan lasted until 1618. Karl IX also had the daughter Katarina, who was married to the Count Johan Kasimir of Pfalz-Zweibrücken (their son would later become Karl X Gustav), so there's enough people in line for the throne to keep Sigismund's heirs out.

Karl IX had a bastard that rose to high ranks in the swedish army. If he was old enough the nobility might wiggle a bit and make him the heir.

Johan of Ostergotland had bad mental health in 1612

Nah, Charles Philip would be king, but if he dies as OTL in 1622, with only a daughter with Elisabeth Ribbing (whom he had secretly married in 1620). So if Charles Philip dies in 1622 as OTL, there would be an uncertain succession, but I guess one of his cousins would get the throne.

Considering that Charles Philip died from a disease he got after he siege of Riga I think that his death is easily butterflied, since he probably wouldn't be there anymore. Also, as Gustav Adolph died ITTL in 1612 then Charles becomes king that year, and by 1622 he probably would have already been married to some noble princess in a diplomatical union instead of Elisabeth Ribbing. He might even have a male heir, ensuring the Vasa dynasty in Sweden. But I wonder if he would be as military successful ITTL as his brother was.
