A Clash of Civilization

On an unknown date of the late 1400’s the Chieftain of Tondo would survive the war with Bruneians who wanted to annex Tondo, he would not have his daughter, Kaylangitan marry Lontok, his son, who Bruneians want her to marry although he would annex Tondo and the lands near it and Dayang Kaylangitan would marry into the Princes of Kaboloan in the north instead who are both in the same realm of Saludong as well which is the Tondo Civilization, the marriage of Kaylangitan to the family of Kaboloan would unite the Ruling Dynasties of the Statelets of Tondo and Kaboloan later on, the Princes of Namayan were expelled north as well, the Statetlets of Tondo and Kaboloan are the centers of Power in Tondo Civilization or Majapahit Saludong.

The Bruneians would annex lands in East and south of the Angat river as well as parts of the Batan Peninsula and all of the Ibalon Peninsula and after the annexation of Tondo, the Northern half of Saludong would be a destination for the Majapahit Hindu exiles aside from Bali as it was also under Majapahit influence.[1]

The Bruneians were said to be spared by them not dealing further with the Tondo/Saludong in the North in their annexation of their eastern prestigious city freeing the Bruneians making them focus their own energies in the Eastern Sea and the Sulu Sea against the Pagan Visayans who they wanted to convert.

Annexation of Sugbu
Annexation of Sugbu

On 16 March 1521 (Julian calendar), Magellan sighted the mountains of what is now Samar while on a mission to find a westward route to the Moluccas Islands for Spain. This event marked the arrival of the first documented Europeans in the Archipelago. The following day, Magellan ordered his men to anchor their ships on the shores of Homonhon Island.

There, Magellan befriended Rajah Kolambu and Rajah Siagu, king of Limasawa, who guided him to Cebu. There he met Rajah Humabon, the Rajah of Cebu. Then, Rajah Humabon and his queen were baptized into the Catholic faith, taking the Christian names Carlos, in honor of King Charles of Spain, and Juana, in honor of King Charles' mother. To commemorate this event, Magellan gave Juana the Santo Niño, an image of the infant Jesus, as a symbol of their new alliance and held their first mass in the coast.

As a result of Magellan's influence with Rajah Humabon, an order had been issued to the nearby chiefs that each of them were to provide food supplies for the ships, and convert to Christianity.

Most chiefs obeyed the order. However, Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the two chiefs within the island of Mactan, was the only chieftain to show his opposition. Lapu-Lapu refused to accept the authority of Rajah Humabon in these matters. This opposition proved to be influential when Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's voyage chronicler, writes,

Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula suggested to Magellan to go to the island of Mactan and force his subject chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu to comply with his orders. Magellan saw an opportunity to strengthen the existing friendship ties with the ruler of the Visayan region and agreed to help him subdue the resistant Lapu-Lapu.

When the body of Magellan was recovered by the warriors, Humabon ordered him to return the bodies of Magellan and some of his crew who were killed, and they would be given as much merchandise as they wished. Lapu-Lapu refused.

Some of the soldiers who survived the battle and returned to Cebu were poisoned while attending a feast given by Humabon. Magellan was succeeded by Juan Sebastián Elcano as commander of the expedition, who ordered the immediate departure after Humabon's betrayal. Elcano and his fleet sailed west and returned to Spain in 1522, completing the first circumnavigation of the world.

The Bruneians would be aware of the Spanish attempts in colonizing Cebu and began their plans of subjugating Sugbu and the Bruneians would attack and and kill Humabon were killed by Bruneian and Sulu troops which were summoned by Lapu Lapu and sanctioned by Abdul Kahar and Brunei annexed Sugbu to the Bruneian Empire.

During the time Loaisa came in Sugbu, it was learned that the Bruneians had annexed Sugbu and the Spanish would have lost their colonization of the island, the land of Butuan would start to be lost by the Spanish as the Bruneians would also annex Butuan as well.

Saiful Rijal would cultivate a close relationship with the ottomans and marry a younger daughter of Hurrem Sultan as his wife.

Consequences of a failed conquest
Consequences of a failed conquest

The Northern half of the Island of Saludong would have an alliance with Demak in order to reconquer Tondo and the lands taken by the Bruneians, which would Islamize the island further seeing the Portuguese as incapable of defending the Kingdom of Sunda which had fell into the clutches of Demak, in this point the independent Saludong would slowly unite under the polity of Kaboloan and a Princess of Demak would marry into Saludong carrying the religion of Islam to Saludong starting the process of Hindus retreating to the Upstream lands forming the Muslim Sultanate of Saludong or Sultanate of Sambali.

On 1570, the Spanish under Philip II of Spain would return to colonize the lands of Sugbu and Butuan, via the conquistador, Miguel de Legaspi but he would fail to colonize the islands of Sugbu and Butuan as they are under the tight control of the Bruneians and they would fail to have a stronghold in those areas and the Bruneians would rule the islands in tight leash and Sugbu’s viceroy is a son of Lapulapu, the man who has defeated Magellan, the Spanish would consider it as not good to their honor as they are already shamed, due to the failed colonization by the Spanish, they would also learn that the Ottomans and Bruneians are already allied via a marriage alliance.

The Legaspi expedition would result in a deadly encounter for a part of his staff and the survivors including Legaspi would leave for the Portuguese held indies.
