Can an independent Guinea (the country in West Africa) be able to annex Guinea-Bissau during its Portuguese colonization? And would the residents there welcome it or would they resist Guinean control?

It's ironic that Portuguese Guinea has closer ties to France (and has its currency controlled by France) than French Guinea does.

Guinea was in the Soviet sphere right? This sounds like an opportunity for some Cuban adventurism!

There was also one in 1969 and still doesn't solve the problem of size.

An invasion can happen before that time too.

Cuban soldiers fighting for the “liberation” of Guinea-Bissau sounds like an interesting story.

Size still an issue. They have to quickly overrun any ports can that be used supply Portuguese forces or otherwise Portugal will draw up more troops from homeland and colonies and drive them out.

I doubt the Soviets want to deal the nightmare of having Cubans shooting at the troops of a NATO member regardless of where fighting takes place.

They cannot under OTL circunstances. If they do for some reason the local population will resist, as former portuguese colonies are known for resisting foreign occupations like East Timor. Eventuall it would ends breaking free like South Sudan.

Portugal was also already really overstretched by this time.

Does America really care to intervene though? They did support a faction in Angola fighting against the Portuguese there.

Goa is an exception though.

What year are they invading. At max Portuguese forces numbered around 32,000. They could just pull back to positions around Bissau, tone down operations in the others colonies and bring in reinforcements.

Since it's against the hated Cubans yes,US did support South Africa while it fought Cuban forces in Angola. Bigger problem is the Soviets as having Cuban forces shooting troops of NATO member state is going a rather big escalation and a nightmare in foreign relations with the west.

Around the years before things started to get rough.

Would the US be in a position to send troops to Guinea-Bissau? They could send military aid but from what they did in Angola they would more likely to negotiate independence.

There's also the local view to consider. When a war goes down anywhere, neighboring nations will start to worry, "am I next?" I imagine that Sierra Leone and Liberia would start going into conniptions if Guinea unceremoniously swallowed its western neighbor, since they're the next smallest states that border them. Senegal, Cote D'Ivoir, and Mali would all probably react with varying degrees of, "WTF? No, that's not okay!" I imagine quite a few very tense Organisation of African Unity meetings would follow, with numerous calls (probably from less Soviet-aligned states) for Guinea to end its occupation of Guinea-Bissau. No idea if it would go farther than that, though (UN resolution, outright war to free G-B, etc.) Bottom line is that I'm not sure the fear and animosity from their neighbors would be worth the resources of G-B for Guinea to annex them.

US won't send troops but expect a blank check when comes to military equipment and diplomatic support .

but from what they did in Angola they would more likely to negotiate independence.
Cubans didn't go to Angola until late 1975 a year and half after Portugal called it quits. US didn't negotiate independence but rather Portugal had a coup and withdraw. US backed UNITA and South Africa against Cuban and the MPLA backed by the Soviets.

This would provided the Portuguese with much needed diplomatic support in America and Europe. Plus for those who wanted an independent guinea Bissau it would of placed them in a bind. Fight Portuguese or fight guinea?

Considering that guinea was a lost cause outside of Bissau by 1970 been a huge boost for the Portuguese.

As for those who are trying to draw parallel between this and India-Goa it is not the same. Goanese were trying to join India and Indian invasion was welcome by most residents. While here we have an independence movement being attacked by another country.
