Greatest Disconnect British Public and Government

How would it be possible for the greatest disconnect between the British public in terms of public opinion and the people in government on how they run the country in terms of law, budget, policies etc?

I'd have to say the run ups to the great landslide elections of the post-war era, i.e. 1945, 1979 and 1997. Generally a humiliating election defeat is a pretty good sign that the previous government wasn't what the people wanted.
