Greater Ukraine

What would happen if Nikita Khrushchev joined the Ukrainian SSR not only Crimea, but also extensive areas along the rivers Don and Kuban? Khrushchev could argue that in the past these were areas in a large percentage inhabited by Ukrainians:

How would the collapse of the USSR look like then? Would Russia accept the loss of these strategically important areas?

Well.. That's not going to end well.. Since the lines blur between what is a russified slav and what is another slav depending on the pogroms of the week subscription.

What you would wind up with is what you know . Irredentist claims based on half and half truths from each side with who ever has the biggest guns being the winner In disputed

Did Russia try to deprive Ukraine of these territories at the time of the collapse of the USSR, or could it use a larger percentage of the Russian-speaking population to influence its policies?

Russia wasn't in much of a position to bargain besides a full on war.

In OTL everyone just said hey.. Let's do this cis thing and just do the existing borders.

And honestly as long as the republics stayed in line with Moscow orbit besides the Baltic which they knew were gone..

Ukraine, Belarus are perceived Moscows playground. Same reason they had a war with Georgia

Last but not least the naval base at svestopol, this was a thorn since the territory was under Russian control since Catherine the great. While sure Tatar, and Ukrainian., neither the ukrianin and Russian overlords neither cared for the local Tatar populations and where more interested in the black sea naval base.

What would be the likelihood of Ukraine having to deal with spillover from the perennial Caucasian messes?
