Greater Soviet Union

In 1950 it was not just the top leadership that were Maoists, there were hundreds of thousands of party members who were hardened Maoists and veterans of the civil war/ rectification campaigns. Killing a few people at the top would not greatly destabilise the country after the civil war had already been won.

I think it would destabilise the country, but it wouldn't leave it open to a foreign power to just waltz in and take over in the space of two months and four days. The chaos resulting from the leadership being killed; the resultant purges, coups, counter coups, loyalists, warlords and successionists swirling round would in itself impede the progress of any attempt to absorb the nation.

The only way I can see China at least falling under Soviet influence more than OTL is if the US decides to escalate the Korean War by dropping atomic bombs on China in response to its intervention in the conflict and sticks with bombing the hell out of China after that.

1948 Italian general election:

Leftist coalition wins, Soviet troops "invited" into Italy. Italy becomes a Communist satellite state.

Wasn't the US planning on backing a military coup if the communists won the Italian elections?

Even if, in the event of an escalated Korean War, a couple dozen cities get nuked, China and its hundreds of millions of people is too big too absorb for the USSR IMHO. And why would they want a country where millions of people are homeless, starving and showing symptoms of radiation disease in varying gradations? If Stalin wants to expand at China's expense he would be better off trying to break China up.

Xinjiang and Tibet are the most likely candidates given their historical separatist tendencies. Manchuria at this point is way too Han dominated for anything other than a heavily backed up puppet government to succeed. Like Manchukuo before it, a Soviet backed regime will have difficulties with legitimacy given that there already is a Chinese government, or two governments if Mao's regime has survived the nuclear onslaught.

The percentage of "reliable slavs" which against official socialist rhetorik always were the main pillar of the Soviet Union would instantly drop well below 20 percent, while the chinese would be the vast majority of the new soviet population. Thats a bad idea.
ITTL:

"Order of the Supreme Command of the Soviet Union on December 24, 1950, No. 500: Great Comrade Stalin has declared the following:

In our great War of Liberation to rescue the proletariat of China after the savage bourgeois-capitalist-tyrant assault, it has been discovered that over 85% of the population of China are bourgeois kulaks and prone to capitalist subversion! By withholding vital food from our brave Red Army, in this time of heavy winter, these kulaks have made clear their Fascist tendency!

This shameful fact has necessitated a new responsibility: a new and glorious dekulakization and collectivization campaign. First, measures were taken to redistribute vital resources to our troops in the liberation of December 1950. Second, the multitudes of bourgeois feudal Sino-Fascist enemies of the Soviet state must be re-educated and liberated by serving the Soviet state! The rehabilitative gulag system welcomes them into its open arms! Third, the private property held by the bourgeois of China is hence redistributed to the brave people of the Soviet Union!

Some stupid people at the home front believe that the annexation of such a large territory would be "imperialist". This is falsehood, and dangerous sedition, that will only help our enemies! The Soviet system of socialism in one country is the only way to fortify against the capitalist-fascist threat! And the only way to protect people of China from the capitalist-fascist threat, too, is to relocate their bourgeois to the productive centers of Siberia!

Comrade Joseph Stalin's ingenious plan ensures that this multitude cannot be turned against us, and will be used to further global socialism."
