Had Southern Rhodesia joined South Africa and Smuts's United Party retained power in 1948 (thus opening the country to immigration, gradually leading to some kind of majority rule, and avoiding Grand Apartheid) could South Africa have become a great power?
Greater South Africa would be comprised of (at least) OTL South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe (I think Botswana might go the same route as OTL Swaziland and Lesotho).
It'd have a better response to the AIDS crisis due to a lack of Apartheid, not hold back the African population, and be more open to immigration following WW2. It also wouldn't be as cut off from trade and investment and have a large population. If just comprised of South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe the population would be around 90 million today or higher.
Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland would likely join some kind of customs union with SA over time. Barotseland too potentially, given how they historically sought to stay under British Protection.
