Greater American custodianship of French interests?

What if the United States was the party that interned the French fleet and protected French colonies? What if American troops were deployed to the French colony of Indochina some time after the fall of France? The closest parallel I could offer would be American troops in Iceland. The British offered the French fleet a chance to sail to America, but I believe a diplomatic SNAFU prevented that. However, I believe the aircraft carrier Bearn and a couple cruisers were interned by the USA. American troops might also be stationed in French African holdings.

How plausible is this? Britain should back this because it gives them security that those colonies can't switch sides, and Vichy France has the same motivation to consent. Would this draw the USA into the war earlier or later?

What I'm curious about would be a TL where the USA (for a reason that remains to be find, admittedly) enter WWII in June 1940, after the fall of France.
Is that even remotely feasible ?

June is a bit early, but September 1940 is Destroyers for Bases. It would be completely justified, if not *smart* for Germany to declare war on the USA at that point.

De Gaulle's Free French are not going to be happy about it. The relationship with Britain and the US was bad enough as things stood, and a move like this would only serve to cement American recognition of the Vichy regime's legitimacy in the eyes of de Gaulle's faction.
