Great President and Vice President Pairings That Never Came To Be

Goldwater/Reagan...my dream ticket. *swoons*

After the ticket is overwhelmingly defeated in 1964, wealthy conservative California Republican businessmen decide to back someone other than Reagan for Governor in 1966...

Mayor of San Francisco George Christopher?

They would still find Christopher too liberal. But if a Goldwater-Reagan ticket went down to disastrous defeat in 1964, they would probably look for another conservative to challenge Christopher in the primary.

Hoover/FDR which was seen as a genuine possibility in 1920.

That is actually quite remarkable, in that Wilson wanted Hoover as his successor, and in 1920, Hoover was seen as this progressive, efficiency-minded non-partisan figure. Someone should write a timeline featuring a Hoover/Roosevelt White House.

Personally, I would very much have appreciated a Republican Gary Johnson/Condoleezza Rice-ticket.

Really? I though a.) Nixon had a big man crush on Connally and b.) Congressional Democrats basically told Nixon the only man they would approve was Ford. Am I incorrect in those assessments?

I think you're right about Nixon's admiration for Connolly but Nixon the politician would have been wary of someone that charismatic who would almost certainly overshadow him. Look at his love-hate relationship with Kissinger. Look at his cabinet. Ford was acceptable to everyone because of his record in the house and his integrity but from Nixon's perspective he was a good choice because he was no threat; maybe he thought that the senate would think twice about impeaching him if his replacement was a man who couldn't walk and ... well, you know the rest!

But Nixon was actually considering dropping Agnew for Connally so while he feared being overshadowed, perhaps he was willing to put people he considered worthy in a place he felt suited them. After all, he did give Kissinger the State Department despite their love-hate relationship.
